Registration inspection after bodywork
If you have modified a vehicle so that the details in the road traffic register no longer match, it must undergo registration inspection. The question is rarely whether, but which modifications count — and what you need in place before the vehicle drives in.

When inspection is required
The starting point is simple: if the vehicle's construction has changed so that the registered details no longer match, it must be inspected before use. That covers changes to body code, weights, axle spacing, coupling devices and similar registered details.
A new body almost always changes one of these. Kerb weight changes when a flatbed is replaced by a box body, and load capacity changes with it. Fitting a crane also moves the centre of gravity and the axle loads.
Pure repairs and replacement with equivalent construction do not normally require inspection. The line between repair and modification is not always obvious, and when in doubt asking the inspection body in advance is cheaper than a failed inspection.
What the inspection looks at
That the vehicle matches the details to be registered: weights, dimensions, axle spacing and body construction. Weighing is often decisive, and that is where surprises appear when a body turned out heavier than calculated.
That the modification is carried out in a way that meets requirements. Mountings, lighting, protective devices and couplings are examined against the rules for the vehicle's class.
That the necessary certificates exist. Depending on the modification, manufacturer certificates or documentation showing components are approved for the use may be needed.
What the workshop needs ready
The chassis manufacturer's bodybuilder instructions are the starting point. They state where and how mountings may be made, which holes may be drilled and what limits apply — and a body built against them can fail even if it looks well made.
Documentation for fitted components. Cranes, tippers and tail lifts have their own approvals and certificates the inspection may ask for.
A weighing before the vehicle is sent off. Discovering that load capacity came out lower than promised is more expensive at the customer than in your own workshop.
A record of what was actually done. A report listing what was fitted, which instructions were followed and who carried out the work makes both the inspection and any later complaint simpler.
Common reasons for failure
Weights that do not match what was declared. Often because the body's weight was estimated rather than weighed.
Mountings made against the chassis manufacturer's instructions — welding where welding is not allowed, holes in prohibited zones, or missing frame reinforcement.
Lighting and protective devices not carried over with the rebuild. Underrun and side guards are the most common, since they often need adapting when the body changes length.
Missing certificates. The work can be correctly done, but without the documentation it cannot be judged on the spot.
Before the vehicle goes for inspection
This removes most failures.
- Read the chassis manufacturer's bodybuilder instructions for that exact model and year.
- Weigh the vehicle and recalculate load capacity against what was promised.
- Collect certificates for fitted components — crane, tipper, tail lift.
- Check underrun guards, side guards and lighting against the new length.
- Document what was fitted and which instructions were followed.
- Book the inspection in good time and ask in advance if anything is unclear.
- Hand the documentation to the customer along with the vehicle.
Common questions
- Is inspection needed if we only change the flatbed?
- If weight or body construction changes compared with what is registered, yes. Replacing with an equivalent flatbed of the same type and weight is normally a repair. The difference is decided by what the register says, not by how big the job felt.
- May the vehicle be driven before inspection?
- A vehicle whose details do not match the register must be inspected before being taken into use. Driving to and from the inspection is normally possible, but check what applies in the individual case.
- Who reports the modification?
- The modification is established through the inspection and registered afterwards. Practical responsibility for getting the vehicle to inspection sits with the owner, but the workshop holds the documentation needed for it to pass.
- What does a failure cost?
- Beyond the re-inspection it costs time at the customer and often dismantling something already fitted. Nearly all failures are avoidable by reading the instructions in advance and weighing before departure.
