Safety round – template and checklist

A recurring safety round is the foundation of work-environment management. Here's what a safety-round template should cover – and how to drop the paper by going digital.

What is a safety round?

A safety round is a systematic walk-through of the workplace to find risks before they cause accidents. It's done regularly, often by manager and safety rep together, and every finding should be followed up with an action.

What a safety-round template should cover

Adapt it to your workshop, but a good template covers at least:

  • Order and tidiness – clear walkways, storage, slip risk
  • Machines and tools – guards, inspection, maintenance
  • Forklift and overhead crane – licences and daily checks
  • Fire – extinguishers, escape routes, hot work
  • Chemicals – labelling, storage, safety data sheets
  • Personal protective equipment – access and use
  • Electrical – cables, RCDs, damaged equipment
  • Noise, lighting and ventilation

From paper template to digital safety round

A Word or Excel template soon gets left in a drawer. In Fitout you run the round on your phone, every deviation automatically becomes an action with an owner and status, and you keep full history for the next round or an inspection.

Frequently asked questions

How often should a safety round be done?
It depends on the operation, but many workshops run quarterly or twice a year – plus on changes. In Fitout rounds can be scheduled so the owner is reminded automatically.
Who is responsible for the safety round?
The employer is responsible, but it's usually done together with the safety rep. Findings must be documented and acted on.
Must safety rounds be documented?
Yes, documentation is part of systematic work-environment management. A digital protocol makes it easy to show what was done.
